So communication in ASL or any such signed language entails acquiring command of a far more complex system of linguistic expression. With this kind of appreciation of sign language structure it is plain that 'signing' apes have never proven capable of displaying grammatical competence comparable to human fluency. The trainer insisted Koko's pervasive interest in their nipples was strictly non-sexual. Regardless, Kendra and Alperin refused to go through with the act, but depositions filed in the case revealed other employees had acquiesced to the gorilla's repeated requests.

As Penny tries to communicate with Koko, the gorilla repeatedly replies 'Nipple' to each of her questions. Papers from the lawsuit claim a number of other employees were said to have exposed themselves to Koko, under both the gorilla's requests and Patterson's instructions.

Now though, The Gorilla Foundation is ensnared in another legal battle, this time with the Cincinnati Zoo. The Zoo had loaned the foundation a silver-back, named Ndume, in , under the hope he would be able to mate with Koko. The foundation claimed Koko had selected him after watching several videos of other gorillas. However, Koko is said to have shunned Ndume shortly after his arrival - even tormenting him on occasion by urinating on him.

Cincinnati Zoo are now attempted to reclaim the last of the Gorilla Foundation's apes, having loaded Ndume to Patterson in in an attempt to mate with Koko. It failed and the pair had to be seperated. Like Koko, he understands a lot of spoken English, but Ndume was never part of the foundation's plan to achieve inter-species communication. Patterson argues that transferring Ndume - who is the last gorilla at her foundation - would be a risk to his health and could kill him.

That was the purpose of the project, to see if a gorilla could learn gestural language. And she has proven that to be true.

Her vocabulary is probably over 1, different signs. We have still yet to chart the second 10 years of the project on the computer, so I can't give you an exact figure.

But after the first 10 years, she had used almost different signs. No, I had read about projects that either used computer symbols or sign language, and I was very much impressed by those. And I wanted to pursue that line of research myself. I don't know. I would say she's probably average in intelligence, because she doesn't impress me as smarter than Michael, for instance.

The problem is not with Michael. The problem is with Koko. Koko was reared with Michael. And female gorillas reared with males often reject them as mates, because of an incest taboo. In the jungle, they leave the group. And she isn't able to to do that here. No, he's a wonderful silverback, a very handsome gorilla. And she just considers him like a brother.
