The Big Island is filled with amazing natural wonders, the most active volcanoes in the world, lush rainforests, snow capped mountains and incredible beaches all spread out and uncrowded.
Mauna Kea is the worlds tallest mountain from the sea floor to it's peak at 33, ft 13, ft. The current eruption has been going on for 20 years and shows no sign of stopping. Off the southern coast of the Big Island, still underwater, Loihi has been erupting since The green sand beach shown in the top picture on this page is something of a natural wonder.
The minerals eroding from the high cliffs make a green hue on the beach. It's at the most southern point on the Big Island, and it's a long walk, unless you're a local. So, prepare to take some time hiking and bring a lot of water. We know it's tempting, but don't do it.
Bad juju. Kolekole means "raw or scarred" in Hawaiian. It's located just north of Hilo on the Hamakua Coast, a little jungle hideaway near the ocean. Kolekole Stream is nearby, as well as a small waterfall. Camping is allowed with a permit. Onekahakaha is popular with locals because it is shallow and has a sandy bottom. Action-packed and iconic, UFO Parasail makes for the perfect adventure tour above the tropical waters of Kona.

First time visitors to the Big Island often notice that island regions are identified by districts, rather than by north shore, south shore, east shore, and west shore. The sunny Kona Districts expand for approximately 60 miles along the west shore from Kona International Airport to south of Kealakekua Bay.
This historical region boasts everything from important landmarks to famous coffee farms. Despite its modern amenities, Kona is a rural area with lots of heart, balmy weather, and calm seas. You may have heard of the terms leeward and windward to describe different sides of islands. Leeward is the side of the island that faces away from the incoming winds.

Kealakekua Bay is an underwater sanctuary and perfect for snorkeling and spotting dolphins and Hawaiian green sea turtles, honu. This ancient Place of Refuge is probably the most visited site on the west side of the island, and it's one of two major national parks on the island, Hawai'i Volcanoes being the other on the eastern coast. As noted previously, some beaches are well hidden along this part of the coastline, so accessing them can also be a bit tricky - but very doable; see the individual pages for details.
